SPARC Internal Review - Deadlines for April 1, 2012 NSERC Strategic Project Grant Competition

SPARC is currently accepting registrations for Internal Review (IR) for the April 1, 2012 NSERC Strategic Project Grant competition.

Registration Deadline:  Monday, February 20, 2012.

Due to the NSERC Strategic Project Grant (SPG) competition timing, a limited Internal Review (IR) program will be offered for those who can provide a well-developed draft of their SPG application by Feb 27, 2012, 5pm.

NSERC CREATE - UBC INTERNAL SELECTION DEADLINE - April 2

UBC is permitted to submit up to 6 applications to the 2012 NSERC CREATE Competition.  Proposal selection will occur through an Internal Selection Peer Reviewed process.

New Tri-Agency Framework on Responsible Conduct of Research

Canada’s research granting agencies: Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), and Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) have recently released the "Tri-Agency Framework: Responsible Conduct of Research" guidelines. This new Framework describes the responsibilities and corresponding policies for researchers, institutions, and the Agencies that together help support and promote a positive research environment.

All researchers who are planning to apply to the SSHRC Partnership Grant Stage 1: LOI are asked to let SPARC know as soon as possible by emailing Nicole.Bennett@ubc.ca.  SPARC will work with your Faculty's Research Support to ensure you are clear on the grant requirements and to coordinate the Letter of Support from the VPRI office (if UBC is the Host Institution). 

SSHRC Insight Development Sample Grants Available

In preparation for the SSHRC Insight Development Grant due Feb 1st, 2012, past recipients have generously contributed a copy of their successful submission to assist fellow researchers in preparing an application. When using past examples, be sure to refer to the Agency's funding call for any competition changes or updates.

Nicole manages the Internal Review Program for NSERC and SSHRC operating grants as well as coordinates workshops specific to these agencies (e.g., SSHRC Insight Grant information session, NSERC Discovery Grant writing workshop, etc.).  She works closely with new and established Faculty, as well as Grant and Research Facilitators within the faculties, towards improving grant success rates for the UBC community.

Changes to Tri-Council Policy Statement and Tutorial

The second edition of the Tri-Council Policy Statement on Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans has now been formally released and is available on the Interagency Advisory Panel on Research Ethics website at http://pre.ethics.gc.ca/pdf/eng/tcps2/TCPS_2_FINAL_Web.pdf.

Dissemination of Research Award

UBC Library is seeking nominations for its annual Innovative Dissemination of Research Award. Established in 2010, this award honours those whose creative use of new tools and technologies enhance the ways that research is disseminated.

All UBC faculty, staff and students are eligible. The recipient will be announced at the Celebrate Research Week Gala event in March 2011.

Nominations will be accepted from November 15 to December 7, 2010.

New Guidelines for Eligibility of SSHRC Applications for Health-related Research

Due to decisions made in Budget 2009, SSHRC has reduced its funding for health-related research that is eligible under the CIHR mandate.

Applicants should consider the following in their decision whether to apply to SSHRC if their research is related to health:

Christy manages the Internal Review (IR) Program, focusing on health research grants.  IR serves to match faculty reviewers with researchers working on CIHR and other health-related proposals, in order to strengthen submissions to external funding agencies and improve success rates.

Christy also coordinates grant writing workshops throughout the year (e.g., CIHR Operating Grant Information Sessions and Working Groups, CIHR New Investigator Salary Award) and works one-on-one with new researchers who have just joined the UBC research community.

Reviewers are required to complete a Reviewer Sign-off Form that summarizes the Internal Review you have undertaken. Please submit the completed form to SPARC.

Attention Researchers in the Faculty of Medicine

If IR is mandatory for the proposal you are reviewing, SPARC will provide a copy of the Reviewer Sign-off Form to the researcher and to the Faculty of Medicine to confirm the requirement has been met.
