International Research Collaboration Workshop Grant

Deadline: April 2 and October 15

The Office of the Vice President Research & International invites applications from UBC faculty members to support the development of workshops or roundtables that will foster significant research collaborations with groups at leading research institutions outside of North America. The program’s objectives are to:

  1. Be a catalyst for international research collaborations in areas of mutual excellence;
  2. Lead to the development of joint research proposals with research institutions outside of North America; and
  3. Strengthen or develop long-term partnerships and advance formal institutional research agreements.

To qualify for this grant, workshops must lead to a joint research agenda and/or delineation of specific research questions or needs, and a strategic plan for joint proposal submission, including identification of potential sources of funding. 

  • Value: Up to 50% of total approved workshop costs, to a maximum of $10,000 CAD.

Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies

The Peter Wall Institute supports fundamental, interdisciplinary research and creative activities which have the potential to result in significant advances to knowledge. The institute focuses on basic (vs. policy) research; all research disciplines at UBC fall within the domain of interest to the Institute.

Funding is available for Workshops and Colloquia, Major Thematic Grants, and Residential Programs for fellows and scholars.  Except in the cases of the Theme Development Workshop, it is expected that every application will bring distinguished scholars with an international reputation to campus.

Peter Wall Institute UBC Visiting Scholar Abroad Award

Deadline:  April 30, 2012       

Two awards of $25,000 are available to UBC faculty members who are early or mid-career scholars (pre-tenure or recently tenured) to travel abroad to undertake innovative research that will make a social, ethical, medical, scientific, or other contribution to the country being visited. The travel abroad can commence any time after July 1, 2012, within one year.

Hampton Fund Research Grant in the Humanities and Social Sciences

Deadline: February 28, 2012

Hampton Fund Research Grants are designed to fund highly meritorious research or scholarly activity that is short-term and forms a new direction in the research career of the investigator(s). The fund encourages research that is interdisciplinary and that offers other theoretical, methodological or empirical innovation. The fund encourages applications from new scholars.

Interdisciplinary Thematic Lecture Series - Green College 

Deadline: April 2, 2012

The Academic Committee of Green College solicits proposals for interdisciplinary lecture-series to be held at the College either between September 2012 and April 2013 or between September 2013 and April 2014.

Proposals should be for a series of at least six and not more than eight lectures or presentations, to be given by distinguished scholars or other experts who, in most cases, would not otherwise be heard on the UBC campus in that year. The series should have a unifying theme that crosses and/or exceeds academic disciplines; proposals that bear on issues of major public concern will be welcome.

Liu Institute Visiting Fellow in Residence at Green College

Deadline: May 15, 2012 

The Liu Institute for Global Issues and Green College invite applications for the position of Liu Institute Visiting Fellow in Residence at Green College for the academic year 2012-13.

The position offers the opportunity for one influential scholar, activist, artist, leader, or practitioner to locate at the Institute for a 4-month period, from September – Dec, or January – April, and to participate in the intellectual and social life of a graduate residential college with a mandate for interdisciplinary studies.  The position aims to facilitate problem-based interdisciplinary research on global issues.
