INTERNATIONAL PARTNERSHIPS

In September 2011, Dr. Rod Carr, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Canterbury in New Zealand, and UBC President Stephen Toope renewed the student mobility agreement that has linked UBC to Canterbury since 1999.

UBC has formal institutional agreements, memoranda of understanding and statements of cooperation with universities all around the world, reflecting more than 25 years of international partnerships.

At present, we have several hundred agreements covering a full range of collaborative activity from student mobility to research collaboration, some of which are specific to a faculty or department and some of which are university-wide.

While VPRI has oversight of these institutional agreements, they are created by many people across UBC, including individual faculty members, the Go Global program and other administrative units.

UBC is a member of two international university networks, the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) and Universitas 21 (U21), both of which support a variety of international activities, including summer schools for students and annual meetings of university presidents. Through these networks, UBC has an advantageous connection with more than 50 international partners.

UBC’s Asia Pacific Regional Office was created in May 2005 to support activities and help create connections in Asia. The APRO is based in Hong Kong.

In addition to our formal agreements, informal partnerships and relationships between institutions, faculty and students help UBC to connect internationally and exchange knowledge and best practices. For example, campus sustainability is of particular interest to all of our international partners; UBC recently hosted a delegation from Cambridge University in the UK to discuss campus planning.
