UBC offers a number of individual recognition awards to investigators who demonstrate excellence in research.
All disciplines are considered, ranging from the applied sciences and medicine to the social sciences and humanities.

Faculty Research Awards
Schedule: Competition guidelines and forms are updated and loaded to this site at the end of June. Early in July, the official 'Call for Nominations' is released. Competitions results are announced on January 31st of each year. The annual reception is held in the Spring.
The following UBC awards are adjudicated by a specially appointed Faculty Research Awards Committee.
Killam Research Fellowships
- Assist promising faculty members who wish to devote full time to research and study in their field during a recognized study leave
- Based on special distinction of intellect with due regard for sound character and personal qualities
- Maximum award is $15,000 for a twelve-month period
- Deadline for applications: September 15

Killam Research Prizes
- Up to ten prizes of $5,000 each are awarded annually to full-time faculty members in recognition of outstanding research and scholarly contributions
- All fields of research are included
- Deadline for applications: October 1

Jacob Biely Prize
- A $1,500 prize and certificate awarded annually to an active faculty researcher for a distinguished record of published research
- All fields of research are eligible

Charles McDowell Award
- This award, consisting of a certificate, is presented to an outstanding young faculty member who has demonstrated excellence in pure or applied scientific research

Sam Black Award for Education and Development in the Visual and Performing Arts
Biennial award recognizing faculty who have made outstanding education and development contributions to (and performances in) art, music, creative writing, theatre or film; and outstanding scholarship in the fine and creative arts

Dorothy Somerset Award for Performance Development in the Visual and Performing Arts
- Biennial award recognizing faculty who have made outstanding contributions to (and performances in) art, music, creative writing, theatre or film
- Next competition cycle: October 2014
President's Award for Public Education through Media
- A $3,000 research stipend presented to a faculty member who has demonstrated outstanding service to the University and the community by sharing research expertise via the news media
- Recognizes contributions such as print and broadcast media interviews and expert commentary
