Language Sciences Transdisciplinary Research

Language, our defining human attribute, underlies human achievements from the development of culture and civilization through current advances in health, sciences, education, and technology in the information economy.

The Language Sciences initiative harnesses the enormous expertise across UBC to address the local and global challenges facing our nation and world in three key themes: The Communicating Mind and Body; Evolving Language in an Information Economy; and Language, Sustainability and Transnationalism.

With over 100 faculty affiliates and a growing cohort of graduate students, Language Sciences brings together some of the most impactful scholars at UBC. Affiliates from both UBC campuses and across a wide range of disciplinary areas – including Arts (over half of the affiliates, covering 10 departments), Applied Science, Science, Medicine, Education, and Business – have joined; these include Distinguished University Scholars, Canada Research Chairs, and Killam Research and Teaching award winners.
