Award Details

This award is given to a full-time tenure-stream UBC faculty member who has demonstrated outstanding service to the University and the community by actively and creatively sharing research expertise via the news media.

The award, which includes a $3,000 honorarium and a certificate, recognizes and encourages such contributions, including print, broadcast, and online media interviews and expert commentary, as valuable means to foster greater public dialogue and understanding.

Eligibility

A nominee must be:

  • A full-time tenure-stream faculty member at UBC.

Terms of the Award

  • One President's Award for Public Education through Media will be available each year.
  • The total value is $3,000, given to the recipient as an honorarium.

Selection Criteria

Nominations will be evaluated against the following three criteria:

  1. Evidence of active and creative sharing of research expertise through the media.
  2. Demonstrated research impact, accounting for context of the discipline or field of study.
  3. Evidence that nominee’s media work has fostered greater public dialogue and understanding of their research.

Nomination Process

  • Self-nominations are not permitted.
  • Faculty members must be nominated by at least one colleague.
  • Nominators may be any current faculty member, including emeriti, student or staff member of the university.

Note: The Dean's office should be informed of the intention to submit a nomination and the name of the proposed nominee in order to avoid duplicate nominations. (Dean's signature not required.)

Nomination Package

Nominators must submit all required materials by the November 15 deadline using this nomination form.

Nomination form fields include:

  • Nominator information: Name, title and affiliation, email address
  • Nominee information: Name, faculty, department, title, rank, year of PhD/terminal degree, year started at UBC, email address
  • Citation (50 words): Please include a brief 50-word citation of the nominees' research written for a non-expert audience.

Documents required:

  1. Nomination Letter (1,200 words): A letter of nomination signed by nominating colleague(s), including the name, title, and affiliation of each nominator.
    • Frame the achievements of the nominee for a non-specialist, multidisciplinary, university-wide committee.
    • Explain how the nominee meets the award criteria and why the nominee should be selected to receive the President’s Award for Public Education through Media.
  2. Media Summary (no page limit): Include a summary of media published or broadcasted with a brief explanation of how the work has fostered greater public dialogue and understanding of the nominee’s research expertise.
  3. Media examples (3): A maximum of three relevant print, broadcast, or online news media example.
    • Include items that exemplify the nominee’s suitability to receive the award (e.g. copies of or links to newspaper or magazine print media articles, interviews, online newspapers or news blogs, etc.)
    • Examples can be in English or other languages; if non-English, a brief translation and brief explanation of the media source and its significance is recommended.
  4. CV: Official updated UBC CV including complete list of publications (no page limit)
