Canada Impact+ Emerging Leaders

Tenure-track opportunities for exceptional international early-career researchers

Canada Impact+ Emerging Leaders is a $120 million investment to help institutions bring more internationally based early-career researchers (ECRs) to Canada. For each Eddie Goldenberg Research Chair of Canada awarded, institutions may request an additional award for six years to recruit an ECR to a tenure-track position.

The ECRs must be recruited within the same strategic priority area as the Research Chair, but need not be in the same discipline or research field, nor be aligned with the same federal funding agency.

Extension of the Emerging Leaders award for an additional six years, at the same yearly amount, will be contingent on confirming that the person recruited as an ECR has progressed in their academic career and that the research conducted since recruitment has been transformational and translational and has garnered partners.

The Emerging Leaders award is granted after the chairholder and the nominating institution formally accept the Research Chair award. Institutions will manage the recruitment and nomination of an ECR for a tenure-track position, in compliance with the Research Chairs requirements.

Only candidates who are internationally based (both working and residing outside of Canada) when the Research Chair is accepted are eligible. Successful nominees will be expected to start their positions at the host institution on a full-time basis within 12 months of acceptance by the chairholder (please see individual ads for more details).

Following UBC's announcement that it was awarded nine Eddie Goldenberg Research Chairs of Canada in the first intake of the competition, we are now recruiting for nine Canada Impact+ Emerging Leaders.

UBC’s Emerging Leader opportunities align with the Government of Canada’s strategic priority areas. Depending on the position, research programs may contribute to one or more of the following for positions relating to intake 1:

  • Environment, climate resilience and the Arctic - 1 position

What we are looking for
  • Research excellence and the potential to establish a distinctive, independent research program.
  • A strong fit with one of UBC’s Emerging Leader opportunities and its associated strategic priority area.
  • A collaborative mindset and potential to work with the associated Eddie Goldenberg Research Chair and other UBC researchers.
  • A commitment to knowledge mobilization, translation, commercialization, partnerships or other pathways to meaningful impact, where appropriate to the field.
  • Leadership potential, including the ability to contribute to a dynamic research environment and help build the next generation of research talent.

Important eligibility note:

Federal program guidance specifies that Emerging Leaders must be recruited from outside Canada and meet the ECR definition at the time of Research Chair acceptance or, where the recruitment process began earlier, when the institution published the Emerging Leader job posting. Applicants should review the official federal requirements carefully and be prepared to provide information confirming eligibility.

Who should apply

These opportunities are intended for exceptional international early-career researchers who are ready to establish an independent research program and contribute to a collaborative, high-impact research ecosystem at UBC.

  • Early-career researcher (ECR): within five years of the start date of the first research-related appointment, after accounting for eligible delays in research under the federal program rules.

  • Internationally based: candidates must meet the federal requirement to be working and residing outside Canada at the applicable point in the recruitment process.
  • Independent research trajectory: applicants should demonstrate the potential to develop an independent program of research in a strategic priority area connected to the successful Eddie Goldenberg Research Chair program.
  • Tenure-track appointment: successful nominees are expected to take up a full-time position at UBC within 12 months of the chairholder’s acceptance of the Research Chair award.

Program information and eligibility are subject to the current Government of Canada requirements and UBC recruitment policies. Federal program page: Canada Impact+ Emerging Leaders – Application process
