Framework for Self-Assessment of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in UBC’s Research Ecosystem Released

The framework for how equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) in UBC’s research ecosystem will be assessed has been published as part of the university’s participation in the federal Dimensions pilot program.

It outlines a self-assessment that will review the institution’s EDI-related policies, programs, practices and initiatives and will build upon, and reinforce, the university’s Inclusion Action Plan and Indigenous Strategic Plan. The self-assessment seeks to identify systemic barriers and inequities experienced by members of historically underserved, marginalized or excluded groups within the UBC research community. It will include an EDI-based examination of UBC’s:

  • hiring practices, pay equity, progression and retention of faculty and staff in the research ecosystem,
  • recruitment, admissions and funding at the graduate level,
  • research services and institutional supports, and
  • research funding and award opportunities and success.

This work will be conducted by a self-assessment team comprising faculty, staff and students, with representation from equity-seeking groups identified in the Dimensions program; these include, but are not limited to, women, Indigenous peoples, persons with disabilities, members of visible minorities/racialized groups, and members of LGBTQ2+ communities.

The completed self-assessment will inform the creation of an action plan to address these systemic barriers and inequities within the university’s research ecosystem, to be released at the conclusion of the pilot. The action plan will aim to improve UBC’s ability to ensure equitable access to funding opportunities, increase equitable and inclusive participation in research, and embed EDI-related considerations in research design and practices across the university.

UBC is one of 17 universities taking part in a pilot project of the federal Dimensions program, having endorsed the Dimensions Charter in 2019. Dimensions seeks to enable transformational change in equity, diversity and inclusion within Canadian post-secondary institutions’ research communities.

UBC’s pilot of the program is jointly led by the Office of the Vice-President, Research and Innovation and the Equity and Inclusion Office.
