Renewed funds available to UBC faculty authors for publishing and open access costs

Faculty authors at both UBC campuses are now invited to apply for support related to scholarly communication through UBC’s renewed Scholarly Publication and Open Access funds.

These funds, previously administered by UBC Library, are available to faculty in any discipline to support work aligned with SSHRC’s General Guidelines for Subject Matter Eligibility. Priority to receive these funds will be given to early-career faculty members where no other funding is available to the author for these costs.

The funds, now administered by the Office of the Vice-President, Research and Innovation, are relaunching with revised and simplified processes, including an online application form through UBC Research+Innovation Apply. Results of eligible applications will be communicated within approximately five weeks. High-level details of each fund are enclosed below:

UBC Open Access Fund

Applications accepted any time until funds are exhausted, up to August 31.

  • Support for article processing charges (APCs) related to publishing in open-access journals or books
  • Maximum award value of $4,000 per applicant
  • Up to $75,000 is available through this fund per academic year (ending August 31.)

Open Access Fund

Scholarly Publication Fund 

Applications accepted any time until funds are exhausted, up to August 31.

  • Support for subventions and other costs related to publishing scholarly works
  • Maximum award value of up to $7,000 per applicant
  • Up to $75,000 is available through this fund per academic year (ending August 31.)

Scholarly Publication Fund

Faculty are encouraged to take advantage of various discounts offered through UBC Library for publishing and open access charges before applying to these funds.
