The Office of the Vice-President, Research & Innovation is pleased to announce the appointment of two UBC faculty members to the role of faculty research advisors.
Faculty research advisors serve both campuses and provide strategic guidance, advice and leadership regarding research funding. The advisors engage and liaise directly with the federal funding agencies and they work in collaboration with VPRI support units to promote awareness of funding opportunities across all disciplines and to provide support for individuals or groups considering applications to CIHR, NSERC, SSHRC and CFI competitions.
The new faculty research advisors are:
- Health research (CIHR): Dr. Cheryl Wellington (Pathology and Laboratory Medicine) as of January 1, 2026.
- CFI: Dr. Warren Poole (Materials Engineering) as of April 1, 2026.
We would like to acknowledge the outstanding contributions of Drs. Kelly McNagny and Jehannine (J9) Austin, who served as health research and CFI advisors respectively since 2023. We are also grateful that Dr. Austin has agreed to extend their role until June 30, 2026 in order to provide continuity and additional support through UBC’s internal processes for the CFI Innovation Fund competition.
Drs. Purang Abolmaesumi and Christina Laffin continue to serve as the faculty research advisors for sciences & engineering research (NSERC) and social sciences & humanities research (SSHRC) respectively.
