Over $47m awarded to UBC researchers through NSERC 2026 Discovery Research Program

July 7, 2026

Today, $630 million in funding through the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Discovery Research Program was announced by the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions along with Karim Bardeesy, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Industry, and Dominique O’Rourke, Member of Parliament for Guelph.

Discovery research is the driving force behind Canada’s most groundbreaking scientific and engineering achievements and is NSERC’s largest area of investment. These investments provide long-term support that enable researchers to push the boundaries of knowledge and pursue bold, transformative ideas across a range of disciplines, including defence and dual-use technologies, Arctic research, AI, quantum science, biotechnology, and clean technologies.

Of this total investment, $47.6 million will support 199 new programs and projects led by UBC researchers.

New UBC-led Projects and Programs

A total of 199 new programs and projects led by UBC researchers were awarded more than $47.6 million through the 2026 NSERC Discovery Research Program competition.

This includes:

  • 183 research programs awarded a combined total of $44.86 million over five years through individual Discovery Grants
    • 44 of these programs were awarded a combined $0.55 million through one-year grants of $12,500 each as part of the Discovery Launch Supplements program
    • Two of these programs were awarded a combined $0.20 million over five years through Northern Research Supplements
  • Two UBC-led projects were awarded funding of $0.83 million over five years through the Discovery Horizons Grants program;
  • 14 projects led by UBC researchers were awarded one-year grants for a combined $1.92 million through Research Tools and Instruments grants.

2026 Discovery Grants

The NSERC Discovery Grants program supports ongoing programs of research with long-term goals rather than a single short-term project or collection of projects. These grants recognize the creativity and innovation that are at the heart of all research advances.

Discovery Launch Supplements provide timely resources to support early career researchers (ECRs) as they establish a Discovery Grant-funded research program. Projects marked with * below were awarded additional Discovery Launch Supplements of $12,500

Northern Research Supplements recognize the added costs unique to conducting research in the Canadian North. Projects marked with ~ below  were awarded Northern Research Supplements.
