William W. L. Cheung is a world-leading expert on climate change impacts on marine ecosystems and fisheries. His pioneering, interdisciplinary research, spanning ecology, oceanography, economics, and social sciences, has transformed global understanding of ocean sustainability, biodiversity conservation, and food security. Cheung’s integrated modelling and scenario approaches have shaped international assessments, informed policy from local to global scales, and advanced adaptation strategies to safeguard marine ecosystems and dependent communities.
Professor William W. L. Cheung is one of nine UBC faculty members announced by the Royal Society of Canada (RSC) as new Fellows and Members of the College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists in September 2025. Fellows and College Members are officially inducted into the RSC at the annual Celebration of Excellence and Engagement in November.
