Award Details

Arthur B. McDonald Fellowships recognize early-stage academic researchers in the natural sciences and engineering and support them to enhance their research capacity, so that they can become leaders in their field and inspire others. NSERC awards up to six McDonald Fellowships (formerly E.W.R. Steacie Fellowships) annually, valued at $250,000 over two years, with full relief from teaching and administrative responsibilities.

To be eligible, candidates must hold an NSERC grant and have held an independent academic position for 10 years or less as of December 14, 2024 (this window may be extended by career interruptions).

UBC is limited to six nominations, so VPRI will coordinate a preliminary selection process to select UBC's candidates in the early fall. More details will be added when available.

As the fellowship requires a two-year release from teaching and administrative duties, candidates should inform their department heads prior to submitting a file for internal selection.
