A new Canvas course about the responsible conduct of research is available to support UBC’s culture of research excellence.
Launched as an extension of the teaching, learning and discussion resources already available on the Responsible Conduct of Research website, the Canvas course invites researchers to consider seven foundational elements of the responsible conduct of research. The course is available to members of the UBC research community through the Workplace Learning Ecosystem and is also open to learners outside the UBC community as part of the university’s commitment to supporting integrity in research across Canada and beyond.
The course and website are part of the university’s Scholarly Integrity Initiative, which is led by the Office of the Vice-President, Research and Innovation and Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies with support from UBC’s Academic Excellence Fund. The initiative expands upon the principles that underlie UBC’s Scholarly Integrity Policy (SC6), which is itself informed by the Tri-Agency Framework on the Responsible Conduct of Research. It was designed to support research excellence at UBC as outlined in the university’s strategic plan, Shaping UBC’s Next Century.
The course invites members of the research community to learn about and reflect upon the responsible conduct of research in seven foundational areas:
- Mentorship and supervision
- Data management
- Writing with integrity
- Authorship and publishing
- Conflict of interest
- Funding and financial management, and
- Research policies
Learners who complete the Canvas course will receive a certificate of completion and join a community of researchers across Canada committed to infusing research culture with values of honesty, accountability, openness and fairness. For UBC learners, the certificate will be registered on Workday as part of the university’s recognized internal professional development offerings.
