The Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry announced an investment of more than $139 million to support 176 new and renewed Canada Research Chairs across 46 institutions in Canada and a further $6m to 29 of the Canada Research Chairs at 22 universities across the country through the CFI John R. Evans Leaders Fund.

The 36 UBC-led projects were awarded more than $2 million in combined funding and UBC researchers were named as co-applicants and collabrators on a further 16 projects being led by researchers at other institutions.

Dr. Mel Krajden at the British Columbia Centre for Disease Control, and professor in UBC's department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, leads the project BOLSTER-3-Pathogen Research: Building Operational Laboratory Strength To Enhance Risk 3 Pathogen Research that was awarded over $4m. This project will modernize one of the containment level 3 labs at the British Columbia Centre for Disease Control to focus on SARS-CoV-2, tuberculosis and multidrug-resistant pathogens.

Genome BC is organizing a Data Literacy webinar series (one data related presentation every couple of months).  The first speaker is Mark Wilkinson, and he will be talking about the FAIR guiding principles on November 24, 2022, from 9:00am-10:00am.

The Office of Research Ethics is recruiting for a project coordinator to work on a 2-year project funded by the Indigenous Strategic Initiative (ISI) Fund.  

The Project Coordinator will offer key administrative and research support and will report to the Core project team (members are from the Office of Research Ethics, IRSI and IRSHDC). The project is to create an Interactive Indigenous Research Ethics Repository.

The BREB was recently asked to advise on how researchers could minimize the occurrence of participants who falsify their identities in order to qualify for research. See the attached for a discussion of the issue and for suggested approaches.
