A total of $589.7 million is being invested in 2,950 new awards through the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Discovery Research Program. Discovery research is the driving force behind Canada’s most groundbreaking scientific and engineering achievements and is NSERC’s largest area of investment.
A further $70.6 million in one-time, one-year extensions with funds to existing Discovery research grants was also announced. This investment is part of a series of major investments in federal research funding, announced today by the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions, through a suite of research programs administered by the three federal research granting agencies—the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).
UBC Researchers Supported through Federal Investments in NSERC, SSHRC and NFRF Competitions
New UBC-led Projects and Programs
A total of 191 new programs and projects led by UBC researchers were awarded more than $48.6 million through the 2025 NSERC Discovery Research Program competition.
This includes:
- 162 research programs awarded a combined total of $40.45 million over five years through individual Discovery Grants
- 40 of these programs were awarded an additional combined $0.50 million through one-year grants of $12,500 each as part of the Discovery Launch Supplements program
- Two of these programs were awarded an additional combined $0.15 million over five years through Northern Research Supplements
- Three UBC-led projects and programs were awarded funding of $3.63 million through the Subatomic Physics (SAP) Discovery Grants program.
- Two UBC-led projects were awarded funding of $0.75 million over five years through the Discovery Horizons Grants program;
- 24 projects led by UBC researchers were awarded one-year grants for a combined $3.15 million through Research Tools and Instruments grants
2025 Discovery Grants
The NSERC Discovery Grants program supports ongoing programs of research with long-term goals rather than a single short-term project or collection of projects. These grants recognize the creativity and innovation that are at the heart of all research advances.
Discovery Launch Supplements provide timely resources to support early career researchers (ECRs) as they establish a Discovery Grant-funded research program. Projects marked with * below were awarded additional Discovery Launch Supplements of $12,500
Northern Research Supplements recognize the added costs unique to conducting research in the Canadian North. Projects marked with ~ below were awarded Northern Research Supplements
