UBC-Metro Vancouver Open Call for Research

As part of a new collaborative research partnership with the Metro Vancouver Project Delivery Team, UBC’s VP Research & Innovation and Faculty of Applied Science are pleased to launch an open call for research proposals that will inform Metro Vancouver’s Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant upgrade.

The existing primary level Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant is being upgraded to a tertiary level of treatment to ensure continued protection of public health and the environment in a growing region. Metro Vancouver is committed to ensuring the wastewater treatment plant makes a positive contribution to the health and wellbeing of people and the environment.

RESEARCH THEMES

Metro Vancouver’s Project Delivery Team is seeking to address the following research themes:

  • Life-cycle assessment: seeking opportunities to mitigate embodied carbon and GHG emissions by implementing a comprehensive or comparative LCA that can inform project planning decisions on materials, process technologies, construction techniques and/or ongoing operation and maintenance programs.
  • Advanced wastewater treatment technologies: seeking an assessment of the pilot plant performance of both Aerobic Granular Sludge (AGS) and Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) technologies, and further optimization of such technologies and/or the development of alternative and more sustainably manufactured membrane materials for wastewater treatment applications.
  • Circular bioeconomy applications: seeking opportunities to assess the viability of utilizing wastewater resources as feedstocks in regional applications. Areas of interest include pathways for:
    • Biosolids --> Cement composite additives
    • Biosolids --> Biocrudes
