The Eddie Goldenberg Research Chairs of Canada program supports institutions in attracting world-leading researchers whose work will help build a stronger, more resilient Canada.
The program supports attracting world-leading researchers whose work addresses critical national and global challenges. The program emphasizes both research excellence and tangible impact. Research Chairs will receive long-term funding and institutional support to advance ambitious and transformative projects in Canada's strategic priority areas, build and maintain exceptional research teams, and collaborate with partners across sectors and borders. Chairholders are expected to drive the translation of discoveries into applications, commercialization and social and economic benefits for Canada and the world, while also developing the next generation of highly qualified personnel.
Results of the first intake of the program were announced on August 27, 2026, and UBC will be welcoming nine chairs across our two campuses over the coming months through the inaugural intake of this program.

Peter Caravan
Eddie Goldenberg Distinguished Research Chair of Canada in Translational Molecular Imaging and Therapy
Dr. Peter Caravan is a world-leading molecular imaging scientist whose work has transformed both the science and clinical practice of targeted imaging and theranostics — an approach that combines diagnostic imaging with targeted treatment. He is internationally recognized as a leading authority on the design of molecular probes for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET), understanding how these probes work in the body, and translating them into tools that can be used in patient care.
Curtis Huttenhower
Eddie Goldenberg Research Chair of Canada in Microbiome Sciences
Dr. Curtis Huttenhower is a global leader in using computational methods to study the functions and biological activities of microbial communities, especially the microbiome — the microorganisms that live in and on the human body. His work has deepened our understanding of microbiome health, as well as fostered the scientific community and tools that now exist to study microbial communities.
