New Faculty Orientation

Joining a new university or transitioning into a faculty role can be a daunting prospect.

The Faculty Relations Office website answers most questions about recruitment; immigration; appointment; orientation; compensation; tenure and promotion; and sabbaticals and retirement.

As well, the VPRI Office provides research orientation opportunities and resources:

Research Orientation Day

Research Orientation Day is a free annual summer event that connects new faculty members with research support units and resources. New researchers meet experienced faculty, research advisors for NSERC, SSHRC, CIHR, CFI, and one another. The date of this year's orientation has not been announced. Last year's was held on Thursday, August 29, 2019.

The program will include:

  • Keynote address
  • Research services: finding and securing funding
  • Tri-council awards (NSERC, SSHRC, CIHR)
  • Communicating research

New Faculty Luncheons are informal meetings that offer new and junior faculty members the chance to discuss research matters with the Vice-President, Research & Innovation.

These small-group sessions create a forum to support the activities of new and junior faculty members, and provide valuable feedback for the continuous improvement of UBC's research infrastructure.

The lunches are scheduled twice each year and are open to faculty members who have been at UBC for fewer than three years.

The date of the next luncheon has not been announced. Last year's took place on Wednesday, December 4, 2019. Please contact Hannelore Roos, if you would like to secure a spot on the guest list.
