The UBC Executive has been exploring ways to more effectively situate the university’s international portfolio within our institution. There is recognition that in recent years there have been challenges related to where this portfolio is positioned in the organization and how it aligns with the various units that support UBC's global aspirations.
In an effort to bring more clarity, to strengthen our international presence, and to achieve synergy amongst our various activities, the UBC Executive has decided to consolidate UBC’s diverse international activities under a newly-created position of Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President International, reporting to the Provost and Vice-President Academic and working closely with the Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Principal (DVC) and Advisor to the DVC on International Initiatives of the Okanagan campus.
This new role will bring together and oversee UBC’s internationally focused units. At the outset, the portfolio will include: the International Office and regional offices; Go Global; the Senior Advisor International (in the Office of the Provost and VP Academic); and the UBC China Council.
To realize this goal, several actions are required:
Policy 18, The Appointment of Designated Senior Academic Administrators (Joint Senate and Board Policy) sets out the process for the selection of candidates for the position including the convening of an advisory committee.
The existing Vice-President Research and International portfolio will be amended to Vice-President, Research.
International student services and advising will remain within the portfolio of the Vice-President, Students.
Dr. Pam Ratner, in addition to her role as Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President Enrolment and Academic Facilities, will take on the new Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President International role on a pro tem basis.
