Six new and renewed UBC Canada Research Chairs appointed

In its 20th year, the Canada Research Chairs Program continues to provide opportunities for researchers to excel in their fields, and build teams of experts at Canadian institutions. In spring 2020, the first of two cycles of funding to be announced this year, the Government of Canada invested $140 million towards 182 new and renewed Canada Research Chairs including six new and renewed chairs at UBC:

  • Christopher Carlsten (Faculty of Medicine), Canada Research Chair in Occupational and Environmental Lung Disease, Tier 2 - Renewal
  • Kota Mizumoto (Faculty of Science), Canada Research Chair in Developmental Neurobiology, Tier 2 - Renewal
  • John L Oliffe (Faculty of Applied Science), Canada Research Chair in Men's Health Promotion, Tier 1 - New
  • Yaniv YP Plan (Faculty of Science), Canada Research Chair in Data Science, Tier 2 - Renewal
  • Scott H Renneckar (Faculty of Forestry), Canada Research Chair in Advanced Renewable Materials, Tier 2 - Renewal
  • Martino Tran (Faculty of Applied Science), Research Chair in Computational Urban Science and Planning, Tier 2 - New

Canada Foundation for Innovation awards funding to newly appointed UBC CRC

The Canada Foundation for Innovation also made an important investment towards the Canada Research Chairs program, providing more than $4.6 million in new funding for research infrastructure. The funding supports 21 Canada Research Chairs at 16 institutions, including an award of $75,003 towards newly appointed Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Computational Urban Science and Planning, and School of Community and Regional Planning professor, Martino Tran.
