UBC Researchers Julio Montaner and Dominic Lopes win prestigious Killam Canada Council Prize and Fellowship

UBC Researchers Julio Montaner and Dominic McIvor Lopes have won the prestigious Killam Prize and Killam Fellowship, respectively.

Montaner, UBC Professor and Head of the Division of AIDS, will receive the 2017 Killam Prize in the Health Sciences from the Canada Council for the Arts.

The Killam Prize honors eminent Canadian scholars and scientists actively engaged in research, whether in industry, government agencies or universities, whose lifetime of work has impacted the lives of Canadians and citizens around the world. Dr. Montaner and his fellow awardees will receive a $100,000 prize and be honoured at Rideau Hall in Ottawa on May 30th.

The Canada Council for the Arts honoured Dr. Montaner for “saving millions of lives worldwide with his bold work on Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART) and championing the ‘Treatment as Prevention’ strategy.'” The council also hailed his support for harm reduction, including safe injection sites and needle exchange programs, and his work with the World Health Organization on prevention strategies for viral hepatitis.

Lopes, UBC Professor of Philosophy, will be awarded a Killam Council for the Arts Research Fellowship in the Humanities for his project "Being for Beauty: Aesthetic Agency and Value."

The Killam Research Fellowships support outstanding scholars (normally full professors at Canadian universities and research institutes) to carry out their groundbreaking projects in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, health sciences, engineering and interdisciplinary studies within these fields.

During the two year period of his Killam Research Fellowship, Lopes will explain how we secure personal meaning and personal fulfillment through skillful participation in shared networks of aesthetic cooperation, confrontation, and innovation.
