Professor Gail Murphy has been appointed as the new Vice-President, Research and Innovation for UBC. She will formally begin the role on August 14, 2017.

Gail Murphy is currently a Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Associate Vice-President, Research pro tem at UBC. She is also co-founder and Chief Scientist at Tasktop Technologies Incorporated.

The UBC REBs released a statement on May 15, 2017 regarding US FDA 1572 Forms.  This policy statement is intended to outline the REB's perspective on Investigators signing US FDA Form 1572 and to set out alternatives that an investigator can propose to the sponsor so that neither the investigator nor the REB are obligated to comply with foreign (US) regulations.

With increasing adoption of Next Generation Sequencing technologies to infectious disease surveillance and outbreak investigations, genomic epidemiology (combining pathogen genomics data with epidemiological investigations to track the spread of infectious diseases) is poised to change the practices of public health and infection controls and provides unprecedented amount of data for pathogen evolution studies.

UBC Researchers Julio Montaner and Dominic McIvor Lopes have won the prestigious Killam Prize and Killam Fellowship, respectively.

Montaner, UBC Professor and Head of the Division of AIDS, will receive the 2017 Killam Prize in the Health Sciences from the Canada Council for the Arts.

UBC biodiversity researcher Dolph Schulter, a leading expert in the evolution of ecological diversity, has been elected a foreign associate of the US National Academy of Sciences.

The CIHR Gold Leaf Prize for Impact goes to the British Columbia Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS, in acknowledgement of the organization’s 25 years of providing care and treatment for those living with HIV, educating health professionals, and promoting evidence-based policy to protect people from the virus.
