A total of 46 projects led by UBC researchers were awarded $31.3 million in combined funding through the Canadian Institutes of Health Research Project Grant: Fall 2023 competition.

CIHR is seeking new Institute Advisory Board (IAB) members. Terms for these positions are up to three years and may be reappointed for a second term of up to three years, for a maximum of six consecutive years of service on any one IAB.

The Federal Government today released the new Policy on Sensitive Technology Research and Affiliations of Concern, which will impact researchers making new applications for funding through the federal granting agencies (CIHR, NSERC, SSHRC) and CFI.

Two UBC researchers have been awarded Commercialization and Exceptional Leadership awards by Mitacs. The Mitacs Awards celebrate Canada’s top talent — students, professors and business owners who are driving research and development and a thriving Canadian economy through their partnership with Mitacs and participation in Mitacs-funded programs.

Dr. Andrew Martindale is recognized with the Connection Award for his interdisciplinary and collaborative work with Indigenous communities on legal systems and rights, as well as his application of geoarchaeology for the location of unmarked graves in efforts to locate missing children from Indian Residential Schools.

Dr. Kayla King has been appointed as the Canada Excellence Research Chair in Evolutionary Dynamics of Host-Pathogen Interactions, while Dr. Isla Myers-Smith was named the Canada Excellence Research Chair in Global Change Ecology of Northern Ecosystems. Dr. Corey Stephenson, who will be joining UBC in June 2024, will hold the Canada Excellence Research Chair in Innovative Synthetic Methods for Translational Chemistry.

As of November 1, 2023, the option to create a Renewal with Amendment will no longer be accepted by the UBC CREB. Any PAAs for Renewal with Amendment submitted on or after November 1 will be sent back with a request to inactivate the PAA, and submit a separate PAA for both the renewal and amendment. The option for the Renewal with Amendment PAA will be removed from RISe mid-December 2023.

The distinction honours Canadians whose outstanding leadership and contributions to medicine and the health sciences have led to extraordinary improvements in human health. Dr. Cullis, a professor in the department of biochemistry and molecular biology at UBC, is recognized for developing the lipid nanoparticle delivery technology that enables mRNA vaccines, such as the highly effective COVID-19 mRNA vaccines, and other next-generation gene therapies.
