The National Killam Program announced today the 2023 Killam Prize and Dorothy Killam Fellowship winners, recognizing the inclusive collaborators, research leaders and barrier breakers who are driving the future of Canada.

The recipients included UBC's Dr. Sally Otto, University Killam Professor and professor of zoology in the Faculty of Science as well as Dr. Pieter Cullis, from the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in the Faculty of Medicine.

A total of 38 emerging and established Research Excellence Clusters led by researchers on the Vancouver campus will be supported in 2023/24. This total includes 23 awards made through the 2023/24 Grants for Catalyzing Research Clusters Competition (GCRC) and 15 clusters entering the second year of their current award.

Program Overview

In support of Canada’s Small Modular Reactor Action Plan, NSERC is partnering with Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) to fund research on SMRs. NRCan has set aside approximately $1,000,000 per year, for 4 years, to co-fund research projects through NSERC’s Alliance grants program. Full program terms here.

VPRI Unit: Animal Care and Use Program

McGill University will no longer provide controlled substances to researchers holding a Health Canada Exemption to Use a Controlled Substance for Scientific Purposes. This means they can no longer be listed as the supplier on the Health Canada Exemption.   UBC Animal Care Services has an account with an alternate supplier CDMV, to allow researchers to order controlled drugs listed on their Health Canada Exemption.

Effective February 14, 2023, the Behavioural Research Ethics Board (BREB) has reduced its COVID safety requirements for conducting in-person research. While continuing to be concerned for the safety of research participants, the BREB will no longer require researchers to submit Safe Research Plans for in-person research, except in the following circumstances:

A team of researchers from UBC and Simon Fraser University (SFU) have received $6.8M in funding from the Healthy Cities Implementation Science (HCIS) Team Grants, including $3M from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), for their research that aims to promote healthy aging, by tackling the epidemics of physical inactivity and loneliness that plague older adults living in medium- and large-sized cities.

A total of 67 projects led by UBC researchers were awarded more than $30 million in combined funding through the Canadian Institutes of Health Research Project Grant: Fall 2022 competition.

On January 19, 2023 the Honourable Filomena Tassi, Minister of the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario, on behalf of the Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Health, announced a new investment to support one clinical trials consortium, seven training platforms, and 22 research projects. This is Canada’s largest-ever investment in clinical trials.
