The Scholarship of Teaching & Learning (SoTL) is increasingly important within post-secondary education. By using systematic, deliberate and methodological inquiry into teaching, we can make a measurable improvement in student learning. Recognising the importance of SoTL within higher education, we are pleased to announce the launch of two funding opportunities.

CIHR is seeking new Institute Advisory Board (IAB) members. Terms for these positions are up to three years and may be reappointed for a second term of up to three years, for a maximum of six consecutive years of service on any one IAB. Responsibilities include advising on Institute health research priorities and strategies and implementation plans for engaging the broader research community. Deadline for applications is April 25, 2023.

CIHR is seeking a new Scientific Director for the Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health (ICRH). This is a 4-year term (with the possibility of a second-term appointment), with responsibilities including providing overall direction and leadership for CIHR-ICRH. UBC awards over $745,000 to support community-university partnerships that benefit communities and advance collaborative research, teaching and learning throughout British Columbia.

VPRI Unit: Research Awards & Prizes

Associate Professor, Dr. Shannon Walsh, has received the Governor General’s Award for Artistic Achievement in Visual and Media Arts. These prestigious awards were created in 1999 by the Canada Council for the Arts and the Governor General of Canada and celebrate excellence in the arts. Each of the winners receives a $25,000 prize and bronze medallion.

The report from the Advisory Panel on the Federal Research Support System was released on Monday, March 20, 2023. This panel was appointed by the ISED Minister and the Minister of Health to provide independent and expert advice on the structure and governance of the federal research system. The National Killam Program announced today the 2023 Killam Prize and Dorothy Killam Fellowship winners, recognizing the inclusive collaborators, research leaders and barrier breakers who are driving the future of Canada.

The recipients included UBC's Dr. Sally Otto, University Killam Professor and professor of zoology in the Faculty of Science as well as Dr. Pieter Cullis, from the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in the Faculty of Medicine.
